Gettin’ my craft on

in general

Besides frantically knitting on the Big Bad Baby Blanket, I’ve also been gettin’ my craft on in other ways.

Example No. 1
Coloring with the kiddos

I help with children’s activities during my church’s regular Wednesday night get-togethers. A couple of weeks ago, the other woman I work with was off on vacation, so I had the kids to myself. While the older kids watched a video, the younger kids colored pictures to send to members of our congregation who haven’t been able to come to church lately, due to illness, hospitalization, or difficulty traveling in the winter weather.

Contemplating some sewing

Anybody who knows me knows that my sewing skills are pretty laughable. (In 4-H when I was in high school, I was still sewing elastic waistband skirts and box shirts while my friends were making prom dresses. Do you know how humiliating it is to have to model a basic skirt and box shirt when your friends are standing next to you with sequins and zippers and darts?!)

But, since I obviously know I can make something that resembles a simple skirt, I finally picked up this book that’s been on my Amazon.com wishlist for months.

I haven’t bought any fabric yet… but I’ve read through the book’s instructions, and they make sense to me. We’ll see if I get the guts up to actually sew something up!

Example No. 3
Makin’ some invitations

As you know, my friend Sally is having a baby. (Which is why I’m on a mission to finish the Big Bad Baby Blanket in time for her shower… a shower that I am co-hosting with her mother and sister-in-law.) I offered to handle the invitations, and handle them I did. In fact, I made them.

I used the same “pattern” as what I used for my sister’s bridal shower invitations, but with a few more details this time around. (I personally think this style of invitation is perfecto because it not only looks nice, but fits perfectly into a regular-sized business envelope. No extra postage needed here!)

I totally do not remember you being in 4H in high school. I was in 4H too, but I think it was in 5th grade or so. Were you in it with me then, and I just don’t remember? I did cooking, I believe.

You should defintely make a skirt. You can have something new and fun for when spring comes in a few months!

I have some great grey wool fabric that just calls out to be a skirt. I’m totally afraid of making something fitted.

The invitations are lovely. I’m always impressed by people who can do stuff with paper. Yarn and fabric inspire me. Paper terrifies.

I’m just getting ready to order some fabric to make skirts from Sew What Skirts, too! I’m so ready for spring….

Ah, yes, the 4H sewing projects…..:)! Remind me sometime to tell you the drama stories that happened in our household over those.

I think it’s wonderful that you have a craft activity for kids that also is an encouragement to the older members of your church. How sweet is that?!

Your invitations look so pretty. It’s something I’d love to learn to do (I have a huge collection of rubber stamps, but not papers). Is there a book you could recommend?
