Rainbows and roofing cement

in general

You may have heard about the weather we had in northern Indiana (and other parts of the Midwest) last week… weather that spawned this:

Rainbow seen from our backyard
(A giant rainbow streaked across the sky, as seen from our backyard.)

and this:

Tornado rips through LaPorte County
(A tornado that, incidentally, my husband drove through on his way to a performance in Chicago. I’m not even kidding.)

This weather system exacerbated a problem we inherited when we bought this house — water leaking into one section of our basement, through a gap between a pipe and the foundation. Although we (and previous owners) have tried to patch it up using various methods (putty and spray foam, to name a few), it obviously wasn’t working. So more drastic measures were needed.

The drastic measures involved a call to Everdry, who sent out a very nice guy who took one look at our problem and very honestly said “You can fix this yourself.” And then proceeded to tell us how.

First, he said, get some roofing cement.

Kris opening roofing cement

Then, dig down to where the pipe extends out from the foundation.

Exposed pipe

Then slather the roofing cement inside the crevices and around the pipe and insulation.

Cement and pipe

More cement and pipe

Then, fill the hole back up.

Let’s hope this worked!

You should bring Kris along when you come here. We have some work around the house & yard before we put it up for sale that we (Kevin) could use his help with! :)

That was very nice of the Everdry guy. Did he tell you how much they charge for their system? If not I can tell you a little story about them.

The rainbow is great. My parents saw a double rainbow up on the north side of town.

Kris gets and A for effort, no matter what.

Hope it works out.

How nice that he was so honest with you. Good work, Kris!
